llse is healing from a failed marriage as a result of her mother’s betrayal. Ziltan is the sole caregiver to his abusive father. When he dies a secret is revealed which shatters Ziltan’s entire world.
Through these two very different lives coming together we glimpse the fine line that both divides and connects us; how families and communities help us grow as we simultaneously push them away. This is the journey of facing our failings and fears and how love, in all its shades and shadows, mends our tattered spirits. The Beckoning Sky has Plot! Mystery! Plenty of lovemaking! and at last a Solution! Nesta - Surrey, BC Maryke Schouten’s The Beckoning Sky, paints a vivid picture of the Western Canadian landscape. The characters are relatable, and reminded me that dragging past baggage into present relationships has repercussions. I enjoyed the twist the story takes, and it left me wanting more. Heather - Airdrie, Alberta "The Beckoning Sky is a beautiful debut novel that allows us to explore, contemplate, and perhaps, reconcile, our own winding paths of heartfelt relationships, new and past. Ilse and Ziltan open the doors for us to walk toward personal healing and acceptance within ourselves.” Melanie - Bakersfield, California |

About The Author
Maryke started writing as a young expatriate child and continued when she returned to Canada in her teens; she took a break when studying and starting her career in dietetics and returned to her first passion when this story came to her in a dream containing only an image, a voice, and two words.
After many years in British Columbia, Maryke now lives in Alberta with her husband and son and a couple of beloved pets, one of whom is her faithful companion on long walks where she connects with the beauty and peace of the land. |
